Biodiesel

What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a cleaner burning home heating oil made up of traditional home heating oil blended with an organic oil such as recycled cooking oil or animal fat. Often referred to as "B-20" biodiesel blend, biodiesel significantly reduces lifecycle emissions, reduces nitrogen oxide and other dangerous toxins being released into the air

What are the long term benefits of biodiesel?

Reducing dangerous emissions and recycling organic materials are only a few of the benefits of swapping to biodiesel. Additionally, because biodiesel is a solvent, it can actually help break down sludge in your heating system!

Do I have to update my heating system to use bio-heat?

Depending on the age of your heating system the simple answer is "No". Old, outdated systems may need to be updated. One of the benefits of biodiesel is that it is a solvent. This means that it can help dissolve sludge accumulated in your heating system and keep it clean, however if your system is very old you may have a significant amount of sludge and if loosened could clog your fuel filters. You should contact Southern NH Energy to discuss your options. Also, here in New Hampshire most oil tanks are inside due to the weather, however if yours is outside you should talk to a Southern NH energy professional to determine if climate may be an issue for your specific tank.

Is Biodiesel more expensive?

Biodiesel can be more expensive per gallon than traditional home heating oil, however the benefits can outweigh the costs. Because it's a cleaner burning fuel you will save money on equipment repairs and service and helping the environment at the same time.

  3. reduce repairs. Southern NH Energy technicians will be able to identify and repair small damages and prevent them from becoming large and costly. In addition, routine cleaning will ensure a long life for your system.
  4. Energy efficiency - A clean heating system will burn more efficiently as well as provide even distribution of heat through your home.
